Hard disk- sometimes the invisible Desktop file the Finder uses to keep track of your desktop, can get messed up resulting in a large, slower booting desktop.  To correct this problem you will need to rebuild the desktop.  Hold down the COMMAND and OPTION keys when you start up or quit an application.  WARNING - you will lose all comments in the Get Info dialog boxes.
